UNITEEE strategically focuses its efforts on three distinct, yet interconnected, groups to maximize its impact in breaking cycles of violence and incarceration.
1. Youth at Risk:
This group includes young people who are facing significant life challenges that could steer them toward negative outcomes like violence or involvement with the justice system.
- Characteristics: These youth may be dealing with factors such as:
- Exposure to violence (either as a witness or victim).
- Lack of positive role models.
- Socioeconomic disadvantages.
- Difficulties in school.
- Mental health struggles.
UNITEEE's Goal: To intervene early and provide consistent support to redirect these youth away from negative paths and toward positive outcomes before deep-seated issues arise.
2. Justice-System Involved Youth:
These are young people who have already had contact with the juvenile justice system. UNITEEE provides specialized programs and support to help them successfully re-enter their communities and avoid further entanglement with the system.
- Characteristics: These youth often require specialized support due to the unique challenges associated with their involvement in the justice system, such as:
- Stigma and discrimination.
- Difficulty reintegrating into school and the community.
- Need for guidance in navigating the justice system.
- Need for support to avoid recidivism.
UNITEEE's Goal: To provide programs that address the specific needs of these youth, focusing on successful reintegration and preventing future involvement in the justice system.
3. Affected Communities:
- UNITEEE recognizes that individual change thrives within a supportive environment. Therefore, they also serve entire communities that are impacted by cycles of violence and incarceration. By working at a community-wide level, UNITEEE aims to create sustainable change that benefits everyone.
- Characteristics: These communities may experience:
- High rates of crime and violence.
- Lack of resources and opportunities.
- A sense of fear and instability.
- The negative effects of mass incarceration.
UNITEEE's Goal: Combining Relationship Building, Educational Advancement, and Leadership Development, is designed to provide comprehensive care that is youth-first and integrated within these communities. They are committed to empowering every young person to overcome obstacles, realize their potential, and become positive community leaders, ultimately disrupting cycles of violence and incarceration.
